Progressive talk media host Ed Schultz died Thursday of natural causes at his home in Minnesota at age 64, The Bismarck Tribune reported.

Schultz's radio and TV career began in the Fargo, North Dakota, market covering sports news, according to Talkers.com. He served as the sports director of local station WDAY-TV in the 1980s.

Schultz was a conservative in the 1980s but became liberal in the 1990s when he met his wife. He built a radio show following that led to syndication with the Jones Radio Network and Dial Global, later being hired by MSNBC in 2009.

After leaving MSNBC in 2015, Schultz hosted a radio show on RT America, which released a statement about his death.

“We at RT America are sad to announce the passing of Edward Andrew Schultz,” the channel said. “This announcement comes as a shock to all of us here at RT America.”

Talkers publisher Michael Harrison said of Schultz’s passing, “The passing of Ed Schultz is a terrible loss to the talk media community and industry.  He was a powerful media presence known for his independent thinking and courage in the face of both ideological and corporate obstacles.”

Listeners and colleagues had kind things to say about Schultz on Twitter.
