The remains of Dylan Redwine, a 13-year-old Colorado boy who went missing during Thanksgiving, have been found, authorities said.

The news shocked area residents and heightened animosity between the boy’s mother and father, who are divorced and blame each other for their son’s death.

At the time he went missing, Redwine was with his father as part of a court-ordered Thanksgiving visit.

The boy's father Mark Redwine said he went out to run errands and when he returned his son was nowhere to be found.

After a 1,600-hour search that involved 45 law enforcement and search and rescue workers, the boy’s remains were discovered earlier this week approximately 10 miles north of his father’s Vallecito Lake home.

Police were only able to recover several of the boy’s bones. The rest of his remains had been picked apart and dispersed by animals, the Denver Post reported.

La Plata County Sheriff's Office announced the bones were positively Dylan's.

"Ninety-eight percent of Dylan is scattered about the countryside," Redwine told the Post, his voice trembling during a Thursday night interview. "I cannot wrap my head around it. You can never be prepared for something like this.

"I am reaching out to his mom so he can have a proper burial. Making sure he gets a proper burial and the respect he deserves is what I have to focus on," the father added.

Redwine said the boy's disappearance and death has compounded animosity with his former wife. At one point, Dylan’s mother called him a "murderer" in the middle of town, he said.

La Plata County Sheriff's Department spokesman Dan Bender said Dylan's death is being treated as a criminal investigation, and both parents have been cooperating in the investigation, the Post reported.

Some resident hope that the boy managed to survive somehow, despite severe weather in the region.

"Everyone is curious to know if they can figure out what happened," Kaitlyn Vervaet, a local café worker told the Post. "Living in the mountains, there's so many things that could have happened. We were all hoping (he had) run away and maybe we'd see him again."
