A British girl whose dying wish was for her body to be frozen was granted that wish by a judge before she died.

The girl, who was 14, suffered from a rare form of cancer and expressed her wish to a judge that she be allowed a chance to “live longer” by being cryogenically preserved.

Her noncustodial father initially opposed her plan because of the cost and process, so the girl went to court to ask that he mother, who supported her wishes, be the only one allowed to make decisions about what happens to her body after her death, AFP reported.

The judge granted the girl's request before she died and she was made aware that her wishes would be carried out.

The procedure to have her body frozen cost about $46,000, which was raised by her grandparents, The New York Times reported.

The girl, who asked not to be named publicly, had researched cryogenics and thought it might be a chance to come back to life at some future time when a cure for her cancer might have been found.

"I want to live longer and I think that in the future they might find a cure for my cancer and wake me up," The New York Times reported the teen wrote to the judge.

"It is no surprise that this application is the only one of its kind to have come before the courts in this country — and probably anywhere else," said Judge Peter Jackson in commenting on his ruling, AFP reported. "It is an example of the new questions science poses to the law — perhaps most of all to family law."
