A Dyersburg, Tennessee, shooting at a birthday party Thursday left the mother of the 2-year-old birthday girl dead and police have charged Torius Russell with first-degree murder.
The shooting took place at 6:30 p.m. and seven people were wounded. Police had been called to the home around 4 p.m. after reports of a car leaving the scene with an armed man inside. According to The Associated Press, police found the vehicle, in which Russell was an occupant, but there was no weapon at the time.
Russell later returned to the home alone and allegedly fired multiple shots at people outside the home who were attending the party, including the 21-year-old mother of the toddler.
At least one other victim, a 6-year-old boy, was airlifted to The Med – Memphis and was reported to be in critical condition.
Many concerned residents and neighbors lined the streets around the crime scene in an attempt to find out what happened and offered prayers and comfort to those involved and their families, The Star Gazette reported.
Earlier articles reported that police were looking for up to three suspects, but the AP reported only Russell was involved.
It is not known whether the 2-year-old birthday party girl was hurt in the shooting. The identities of the victims have not been released.
