Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade announced via Twitter he was donating $200,000 to the "March for Our Lives" fundraiser and to the families of victims of the recent shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Wade said he was donating because of growing up in Chicago where levels of gun violence are high.

The GoFundMe page to which Wade linked in his tweet said half of the money raised would go toward the march and half to the victims and families of the shooting via the Broward Education Foundation.

Wade also sponsored and dedicated an art exhibit in Miami over the weekend titled "Parkland 17," which featured images of the students and staff killed in the shooting along with statistics on gun violence, The Hill reported.

The basketball star also dedicated the rest of his season to one of the shooting victims, Joaquin Oliver, who was buried in Wade's jersey, The Hill reported.

The GoFundMe campaign is seeking to raise $3.5 million and has raised more than $3.2 million from over 40,000 donors. The "March for Our Lives" event is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., on March 24. Students around the country have also planned other protests and walkouts to demand action on gun control and safety measures for schools.
