"Excited to make the first ever epic 3D disaster movie!" Johnson tweeted Tuesday. "A privilege to play the role."
The film will be helmed by Brad Peyton, who directed Johnson in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."
Johnson recently completed shooting "Hercules: The Thracian Wars," and is already in production for "Fast & Furious 7," where he is featured as bounty hunter Luke Hobbs. Both movies are scheduled for releases in July 2014.
His star has continued to rise worldwide, amid box-office hits "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "Pain & Gain" and "Fast & Furious 6."
In addition to his acting and wrestling career, Johnson was also a member of the University of Miami's national championship football team in 1991. He briefly played in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders. His father, Rocky Johnson, and grandfather, Peter Maivia, were also professional wrestlers.
