'Dumb and Dumber 2': Sequel Gets Picked Up by Universal Pictures

By    |   Wednesday, 19 June 2013 06:26 PM EDT

"Dumb and Dumber" is finally getting even dumber with news of "Dumb and Dumber 2." Er, make that "Dumb and Dumber To."

Fans of hapless heroes Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne will get the chance to spend another two hours with them next summer, after the Farrelly Brothers secured a distribution deal for a sequel to their 1994 comedy hit.

A little more than a week after Warner Bros. announced it had passed on "Dumb and Dumber To," (yes, it's really spelled that way) Bobby and Peter Farrelly announced that Universal Pictures and Red Granite Pictures saved the day.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are returning as the lovable lunkheads. According to a Deadline.com report, the sequel will find the two buddies on a road trip.

"IT'S OFFICIAL: 'Dumb and Dumber To' is going into production with @RedGranitePics and @UniversalPics!!!" the Farrelly Brothers posted on their Twitter account.

The Farrellys and Universal hope to have "Dumb and Dumber To" in theaters in the summer of 2014, the 20th anniversary of the original.

"We'll hopefully be shooting by August, in Atlanta, and be out next summer," Peter Farrelly told Nerdist.com in a podcast. "It takes place in Rhode Island, but you shoot in Atlanta because it's cheap."

Shooting for the project came together quickly because of scheduling. Daniels will begin work on a third season of the HBO series "The Newsroom" in the fall, while Carrey is set to star in a comedy with Owen Wilson.

Farrelly told Nerdist.com that the media has exaggerated the film's problems.

"There's been a lot of press how Warner Bros. didn't want to make ['Dumb and Dumber To'] and that's got nothing to do with that," Farrelly told the website. "['Dumb and Dumber'] was made originally by New Line [Cinema], and New Line now is owned by Warner Bros., but it was never really a Warner Bros. thing. Long story short, we're going to another studio and there have been negotiations — that's what's held this thing up, because we're negotiating with two other studios, Warner Bros. and New Line, about how to get it out of there."

There's no word as to whether actress Lauren Holly, who later married and divorced Carrey, will return to play Mary Swanson. Even if the odds are long, we're telling you "there's a chance."
