Pop singer Aimee Anne Duffy, best known as Duffy, dominated the airwaves in the late 2000s but then suddenly disappeared. Since then fans have not heard from the "Mercy" singer, until now.

Duffy broke her silence on Tuesday to speak candidly about how she avoided the spotlight after being raped, drugged and held captive for several days. Taking to Instagram, the pop icon shared her story in a raw post.

"Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why," she wrote, explaining that she chose to open up over the summer to a journalist who interviewed her.

"The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days," Duffy continued. "Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine."

Duffy explained that she chose not to use her music to express the pain she had endured because she did not want the world to see her sadness.

"I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke."

In 2008 Duffy released her Grammy-winning debut album "Rockerferry" and dropped her follow-up album, "Endlessly" in 2010, according to Rolling Stone. The following year Duffy said she was taking a break from the music scene.

It is not clear when the kidnapping took place but Duffy said she would be posting a spoken interview with more details of her harrowing experience.

"Please respect this is a gentle move for me to make, for myself, and I do not want any intrusion to my family," she added. "Please support me to make this a positive experience."
