'Drunk Girl' Video Was a Hoax, Star Actress Confesses

A video of a drunk girl wandering around Hollywood Boulevard that went viral last week was revealed to be a staged hoax this week, and has since been removed from YouTube.

The actress in the video, Jennifer Box, on Monday released a video saying she was hired by the video's producers, two men named Stephen Zhang and Seth Leach, to perform what was later billed as a real-life "social experiment." She also made it clear that all of the men featured were also directed to prey on her.

According to The Smoking Gun, who spoke with a few of the men, they all tell similar stories of being approached by the producers and asked to say a few lines. They said the producers billed it as a comedy video, a sort of skit. Instead, it made them all look like rapists.

After one of the men in the video took to Facebook to explain how he had been tricked into helping with the video, Leach sent him a private message saying, "The important thing to consider is that this video is going to get you well known and have a future with us and our company."

Leach himself posted to Facebook several times bragging about his video racking up a few million views on YouTube.

He wrote that the video was "on the homepage of pretty much every news and media website you can think of" and mentioned that he was "heading out to LA again tomorrow and creating some more viral videos for your viewing and learning pleasure!" He then tagged Zhang, Box, and soundman Chris Olmedo in the post, writing "We are the dream team!"

In its own report about the hoax, Jezebel.com summed up the whole episode quite nicely.

"What this was supposed to prove: Virtually all men are looking for sex regardless of consent. What this actually proved: Bad acting and lots of editing will get lots of views."

In Newsmax's report on the video last week, the question as to whether or not the whole thing was staged was in fact raised, and indeed the entire thing turned out to be a classic episode of crying wolf. As in the parable, the video's producers have likely endangered the next young woman who really is preyed upon — one that isn't acting.
