Drug-Filled Football Confiscated After Being Thrown Over Prison Gate

A Detroit man was arraigned Tuesday and charged with felony contraband charges after attempting to throw a football loaded with drugs and cellphones into the yard of a state prison.

State Trooper Toby Baker says Sunday's throw by Christen D. Moore, 22, fell short, with the football landing between two fences, not in the yard where prisoners exercise, The Associated Press reported.

An officer at Michigan's G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility saw the man throw the football and immediately arrested the suspect.

"After observing the passenger exit the vehicle and throw the football, our officer ran towards the vehicle and drew his Taser and told the driver to stop, which he did," Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections, told The Detroit Free Press.

The ball contained heroin, marijuana, tobacco, three cellphones, and chargers.

"From where he was throwing, it would not have been that difficult of a throw to throw it in . . . but you don't know how heavy it was," said Marlan, according to Reuters. He said the intended receiver remains unknown at this time.

Moore was arraigned in Jackson District Court and ordered jailed on a $50,000 bond. His probable-cause hearing is June 30.

The AP left a message with the court seeking information on whether he has a lawyer.
