Drone in Son Doong Cave Takes Underground Aerial Trip (Video)

A camera-mounted drone has captured some of the most dramatic shots yet of Vietnam's 5.5-mile long Hang Son Doong Cave, believed to be big enough to fit skyscrapers and 747 jumbo jets in some its caverns.

American photographer Ryan Deboodt used his DJI Phantom 2 drone to record the video for a company that organizes a seven-day, six-night trip to the cave, considered to be one of the largest in the world, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The cave was found in 1990 but not explored until 2009. It opened for tours in 2013.

"It’s incredibly difficult to put into words how amazing Hang Son Doong really is," Deboodt said in his blog. "From the shear size of the cave to where plant life has started growing inside the cave. It is truly otherworldly and something that probably can't be experienced anywhere else in the world."

Natasha Geiling of Smithsonian.com wrote that the cave has its own virgin jungle growing 600 feet below the Earth's surface in an area where roof has collapsed, allowing sunlight to filter through the cave's floor.

"Plants both small and large can thrive in the cave jungle – trees there can grow nearly 100 feet tall," Geiling wrote. "The jungle's larger plants provide home to animals not normally found below the Earth, like monkeys. A river also flows within the Son Doong Cave."

Deboodt described watching the sunlight come through the cave while with other explorers in his blog.

"We also were incredibly lucky to witness sunbeams in Hang En the last morning we were there," Deboodt wrote. "At first we didn't think it was going to happen as it was cloudy and foggy outside. Everyone decided to call it and head back towards civilization, but I wanted to stay and Thanh was kind enough to stay back with me. When the clouds broke and sunbeam started forming my breath was taken away. It was an absolutely incredible sight."
