Drone at Phillies Game? Man Questioned, but Released After Incident

The operator of a drone that illegally flew over Citizens Bank Park during Sunday's Philadelphia Phillies game has been questioned by police but was not charged in the incident.

Around the sixth inning of the game, security officials noticed and reported drone activity near the third-base gate, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Authorities quickly detained a man flying the drone outside the stadium. He was reportedly carrying a handgun, but had a permit for it, the newspaper noted.

The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigating and the drone operator could face a fine, as he broke FAA rules by flying the device below 3,000 feet within three miles of a baseball or football stadium with a capacity of at least 30,000, the Inquirer reported.

Phillies security director Sal DeAngelis told the Inquirer that the drone did not fly over the field or disturb the Phillies’ game against the Colorado Rockies. He said the detained man was cooperative and released without being charged. The drone, which reportedly had a camera attached to it, was confiscated.

According to WPVI-TV, Phillies security personnel asked the man to erase images captured with the drone, citing intellectual property laws.

Park visitors had mixed reactions to the drone incident when speaking with ABC 6.

"I think it's kind of cool — the fact that they invested, they bought a drone and a camera to go with it. It's a lot of effort," fan Alex Martinez told the station.

"The fact that it wasn't Phillies-oriented concerns me," another person, Christina Godio, said.

The drone is said to have been worth about $1,000.

Drone sightings have become increasingly common and troublesome over stadiums, specifically for college and NFL sporting arenas.
