Drone in Fireworks Flights Get Spectacular Results (Video)

By    |   Monday, 07 July 2014 08:50 AM EDT

With the summer fireworks season going full blast, drone owners have been flying their remote control aircraft into pyrotechnic celebrations with spectacular results, but some are calling the new trend irresponsible.

A video posted on YouTube showing a drone flying through Florida fireworks over West Palm Beach  has received 6.3 million views and more than 3,400 comments.

The Tennessean reported that Nashville businessman Robert Hartline did the same thing during Fourth of July fireworks in Nashville on Friday.

The West Palm Beach video was posted in May by Jos Stiglingh, according to the New York Daily News.

"BE SURE TO WATCH IN HD! Flying through a firework show with a DJI Phantom 2 and filming it with a GoPro Hero 3 silver," Stiglingh wrote on YouTube. "The quad was not damaged."

"Fireworks from a truly interesting and beautiful perspective," said one YouTube commenter. "However, I can see how such use of drones could cause concern and even controversy. It's a double edged sword. … Looks like some regulations may be in order."

Others commenters were more harsh.

"Absolutely reckless. People, don't do this, it is an idiotic and reprehensible move," another commenter wrote. "You fly your drone into the middle of a fireworks display, say it gets hit, then falls. It could land on the crew running the show, not to mention land in the display and prevent a shell from firing correctly."

The videos impressed many on Twitter and social media.

Others expressed concern about the risk taken to capture such video.

"There’s no doubt that the HD video is stunning," wrote Forbes contributor Gregory McNeal. "It's also dangerous and likely unlawful (at least if it occurred in the United States). The flight is unsafe as the existence of the drone in the airspace above the fireworks display creates an increased risk of hazardous debris (from the fireworks or the drone) falling into spectator areas."
