New York high school senior Draven Rodriguez is making an Internet stir with his proposed yearbook photo featuring laser lights and a cat.

Rodriguez told the Daily Gazette that he decided during his junior year that he wanted a senior portrait that would stand out.

“I don’t want to go in the yearbook with the generic ‘I-look-like-everyone-else’ photo,” he said. “I wanted a ‘He looks great. Only he would try that’ photo.”

Rodriguez’s cat, Mr. Bigglesworth, is a main component of the photo, which is an artistic combination of two photos.

However, it’s up in the air as to whether the portrait, which the Gazette called “part portrait, part performance art” and a “bad 1970s album cover crossed with a ‘Hang in There, Baby’ cat poster,” will be allowed in the yearbook.

Rodriguez apparently figured the school may nix the photo because he started a petition online to support its inclusion in the yearbook. It’s that petition, which has almost 5,000 signatures, that made the photo go viral and got him on the news.

“I can't believe how huge this is. I'm on Jezebel, the Gazette and CBS 6,” Rodriguez said on the petition. “Thank you all for your support! We'll hit 500 soon.”

Obviously, that was an old edit, before he topped 1,000 and then 4,000.

Although there’s no official word from the school district yet, a district spokesperson told the Gazette that the picture couldn’t appear in the senior portrait section, which has guidelines. But it can be placed elsewhere in the yearbook.

When the Gazette told him what the spokesperson said, Rodriguez told the newspaper, “I can work with that. I’m not trying to make any statement other than my photo is ridiculous and this is how I am.”
