Focus Features announced Friday that a full-length "Downton Abbey" movie was given the greenlight to begin production late this summer, Focus Features announced Friday.

With a screenplay written by series creator Julian Fellowes, the movie will feature original principal cast members, and Brian Percival, no stranger to British TV, has been recruited to direct the film, Deadline reported. He also directed the "upstairs/downstairs" show's pilot.

Fellowes also will also serve as executive producer, along with Gareth Neame, Liz Trubridge and Nigel Marchant.

“When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production,” Neame said in a news release. “Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as ‘Downton’ comes to the big screen.”

The feature film should come as something of a relief to fans of the former series.

“Since the series ended, fans of ‘Downton’ have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said in the release. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of ‘Downton’ to the big screen.”

Focus Features and Universal Pictures International will distribute the movie, which will be a Carnival Films production. Neame serves as Carnival’s executive chairman.

NBC announced last year that a "Downton Abbey" feature film was in the works — today’s announcement made it all a reality.

The official “Downton Abbey” Twitter account announced the upcoming film in perfect upper-class British style. It tweeted the photo of a butler presenting a silver platter holding a card reading: “We cordially invite you to return to Downton Abbey — Only in Cinemas.”

Fans of the series were excited about the upcoming movie.
