The symbolic Doomsday Clock has moved 30 seconds closer to midnight and is now sits at just two minutes before apocalypse, the closest it has been since 1953.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists made the decision to move the time because in its estimation, the world has become “more dangerous.” The group mentioned nuclear tests by North Korea and rising tensions between the U.S. and Russia as reasons for their decision.

“This is the closest the clock has ever been to Doomsday, and as close as it was in 1953, at the height of the Cold War,” BAS President Rachel Bronson said in an announcement, USA Today reported. In 1953, both the U.S. and the Soviet Union tested hydrogen bombs.

Dangerous political rhetoric and climate change were other reasons given for the new assessment.

The Doomsday Clock also moved forward 30 seconds last year, mainly due to President Donald Trump’s “alarming campaign rhetoric,” Global Zero Director Derek Johnson said, USA Today reported. Johnson, whose group wants to eliminate all nuclear weapons, said that “the reality of a nuclear-armed President Trump running loose in the world is worse than we feared.”

When the Cold War ended in 1991, the Doomsday Clock was 17 minutes from midnight, which is as far as it has been since 1947, when the clock started.

Despite the dire nature of setting the clock forward, at least a few on Twitter managed to keep their sense of humor.
