Donna Hoagland donated a kidney to the mother of one her students at Marsh Point Elementary School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, over the Christmas break, providing for the ultimate teachable moment, WPEC-TV reported last week.

Anahita Volk, the mother fourth-grader Troy Volk, was diagnosed as being in stage 5 kidney failure, but had such a rare blood type that it made finding a donor a challenge, the television station said.

When Hoagland learned of the situation and found out that she was a match, she contacted Anahita Volk with her plan to donate her kidney, according to WPEC-TV.

"It saddens me that people die of this every day, my simple solution, I can take care of this," Hoagland told the television station. "(Anahita Volk) was kind of dumbfounded like, you would do that for me? And my thought was, why wouldn't I do that for you? I just wanted to help her."

Hoagland told CBS News she first noticed that Troy's behavior had changed in her classroom where he "just shut down at times." When the teacher approached Anahita Volk about the change, she confessed about her dire health problems.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for Anahita Volk's medical expenses, the mother said she was diagnosed with Membranous Glomerulonephritis, stage 4 kidney failure, during her second pregnancy in 2013 and put on kidney dialysis in December 2014.

"When my parents told me about the kidney failing stuff, I was getting a little down," Troy Volk told CBS News.

Hoagland said when she found out she was a match, she did research on how to become a kidney donor, before calling up Anahita Volk for one special parent-teacher conference, CBS News wrote.

"I'm like, 'what are you talking about?' She turns around and she's like, 'we're a match,'" Anahita Volk told CBS News.

When asked how she could ever say "thank you for such, a gift," Anahita Volk said, "You can't. You really can't."

Volk and Hoagland are doing well after the donation, but Troy Volk added that for his family, the transplant is the gift that keeps on giving, according to CBS News.

"The one thing I love about my mom's kidney transplant … is that we all get a gift," Troy told CBS News. "The same gift – it's not a gift that can be wrapped in a present. It's like a miracle. A perfect match is a miracle."

The Palm Beach County School District told WPEC-TV that it will honor Hoagland at a board meeting next month.
