Donald Trump defended Tom Brady on Thursday, saying "it’s ridiculous the way they've treated him."
"Tom Brady, is he getting a raw deal from the commissioner, Rodger Goodell? What do you think?" Maria Bartiromo asked Trump in an interview on Fox Business Network.
"I think it’s ridiculous the way they’ve treated him," Trump responded. "He’s a friend of mine, he’s a great friend of mine, he’s a great guy, and I think it’s ridiculous the way they’ve treated him. To spend $10 million in legal fees, and now it’s probably higher than that, it’s crazy. He’s a great star. They ought to go back to playing football. This country has bigger problems."
Bartiromo asked Trump who he'd pick for his Fantasy Football team, and he didn't hesitate to say Brady would be his first pick.
"I have taken him for years, and if you have done some friendly bets on Tom Brady, you've done very well," Trump said,
according to CBS News.
Brady and Goodell last appeared in court on Aug. 12 to litigate the quarterback's 4-game suspension over the so-called Deflategate controversy. Brady continues to deny knowledge of any plan to deflate footballs during a January playoff game between the Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.
If Goodell and Brady don't reach a settlement agreement, they are expected back in court on Aug. 31. Judge Richard Berman will hand down a sentence no later than Sept. 4, before the start of the NFL's regular season.
NBC reported that Trump considered buying the Patriots in 1988, however he ultimately passed on the opportunity.
