Donald Trump wants immigration suspended temporarily from "areas of the world when there is a proven history of terrorism," the Republican nominee-in-waiting said in a national security speech on Monday in response to the Orlando gay nightclub terrorist attack, reported The Hill.

"The immigration laws of the United States give the president powers to suspend entry into the country of any class of persons," Trump said in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Trump also charged that political correctness has kept the Obama administration from seriously dealing with the problem, noted USA Today.

"This is a very dark moment in America's history," Trump said. "If we don't get tough, and if we don't get smart, and fast, we're not going to have our country anymore."

Trump added that he believed the law would give him to power as president to restrict immigration in light of national interest, reported CNBC.

"I would use this power to protect the American people," Trump said. "When I'm elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we fully understand how to end these threats."

Trump said the U.S. must stop allowing "thousands upon thousands" of immigrants enter the country who "have the same thought process" of Orlando shooter Omar Mateen, who he called a "savage killer."

"We're importing radical Islamic terrorism into the West through a failed immigration system and through an intelligence community held back by our president," Trump said. "Even our own FBI director has admitted that we cannot effectively check the backgrounds of people we're letting into America."
