Former President Donald Trump's administration twice tried to give Dolly Parton the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her philanthropy and both times she turned the offer down, the iconic country star has revealed.

"I couldn't accept it because my husband was ill and then they asked me again about it and I wouldn't travel because of the COVID," Parton explained to Today in an interview published Tuesday.

The music legend has now been contacted by President Joe Biden about the award but she is likely to turn it down for the third time.

"Now I feel like if I take it, I'll be doing politics, so I'm not sure," Parton said. "But I don't work for those awards," she added. "It'd be nice but I'm not sure that I even deserve it. But it's a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it."

In the last 26 years, Parton has donated over 100 million books to children as part of a literacy program run by Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. She also established a fund in 2016 through the Dollywood Foundation to provide $1,000 a month to help victims of the wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee and last year donated $100 million towards the development of the Moderna vaccine.

Despite her generous efforts, Parton revealed that she had not received the vaccine yet, although she is eligible for it.

"I'm going to get it, though," she told CNN on Thursday. "I didn't want to jump line. I didn't donate the money so I could be protected. I did it for everybody."
