Dole Fresh Vegetables issued a recall on Monday for bagged spinach distributed in 13 states due to a possible salmonella contamination.

USA Today reported via MSN that the 33,600 bags affected have an "Enjoy by" date of Oct. 15, the codes A27409B and A27409A, and UPC 7143000976.

The spinach was distributed in Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin.

Dole has contacted grocers and other stockists to pull the affected bags from shelves, and customers who believe they may have purchased the spinach are encouraged to throw it away. Thus far, no customers have reported illness in connection with the spinach.

The recall was prompted when a random sample of spinach processed at Dole's facility in Springfield, Ohio, was tested by Michigan's Agriculture Department and came back positive for salmonella.

"The FDA told us about the test yesterday and we immediately began recalling the product," said company spokesman William Goldfield. "I believe the FDA is going through the plant right now, and we expect to get back up and running soon."

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

As CNN reported salmonella poisoning sends 19,000 people to the hospital annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
