A doctor punched a shark in the face during an attack in Australia, allowing him to escape with his life Monday.

Charlie Fry, 25, a British doctor who recently moved to Australia, said that he was surfing at Avoca Beach, north of Sydney, when without warning a shark jumped out of the water and bit him, The Telegraph reported.

"I saw a shark's head come out of the water, with its teeth, and I just punched it in the face," Fry told Australia's 9 News. "(I) then got back on my board, shouted at my friends who were there, and then managed to catch a wave in."

Fry said punching the shark was inspired by professional surfer Mick Fanning, who fended off a shark during a competition in South Africa in 2015. Fanning said he was able to "get a punch into its back" and startle it after video caught a shark approaching him, the BBC News reported at the time.

Fry, who works in the emergency department at Wyong Hospital, told 9 News that he estimated that the shark was about 6 feet long.

"It's one of those things where you worry when they find it, it's going to be this big and ruin your story," Fry told 9 News. "But I got the impression it was big, it felt big to me, the head was really big... it was about to eat me."

Fry told the news channel that punching the shark after he was bitten came off of "pure adrenaline" fearing for his life.

"I genuinely thought I was going to die, like 'you're about to be eaten alive by a shark', so everything slowed down, like 'get on your board and surf,'" he added.

Luckily, two of Fry's friends he was surfing with were also doctors and provided medical care before taking him to Gosford Hospital, 9 News stated. He suffered bit marks on this shoulder and arm.

"It was very helpful because obviously everyone was quite calm," Fry told 9 News.
