DMX the rapper, aka Earl Simmons, has been charged with evading $1.7 million in taxes on concealed income. Maybe he just put the wrong name on his tax form?

According to the federal indictment in New York City, Simmons racked up the tax liabilities between 2002 and 2015.

Simmons allegedly failed to file personal income tax returns despite earning more than $2.3 million.

“Instead, he orchestrated a scheme to evade payment of his outstanding tax liabilities, largely by maintaining a cash lifestyle, avoiding the use of a personal bank account, and using the bank accounts of nominees, including his business managers, to pay personal expenses,” said the indictment.

Simmons reportedly made several attempts to conceal his income from the IRS, depositing thousands of dollars in royalties into his managers’ bank accounts, filing a false affidavit in U.S. Bankruptcy Court and listing his income as “unknown”.

Simmons faces 14 counts, including “one count of corruptly endeavouring to obstruct and impede the due administration of Internal Revenue Laws, one count of evasion of payment of income taxes, six counts of evasion of assessment of income tax liability, and six counts of failure to file a U.S. individual income tax return.”

Said U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim: “Celebrity rapper or not, all Americans must pay their taxes, and together with our partners at the IRS, we will pursue those who deliberately and criminally evade this basic obligation of citizenship.”

Simmons' latest charges add to an extensive rap sheet, said Billboard. The rapper has had “arrests ranging from drug possession, DUI, theft and animal cruelty to probation violations, aggravated assault, failure to pay child support, possession of a weapon and more.” He also reportedly has been arrested on at least 15 driving related charges.
