For the first time in its history, the Disney Channel will feature a gay character who comes out on one of its shows for tweens.

During its second season, which premieres Friday at 8 p.m., "Andi Mack" will feature the coming-out story of Andi’s friend Cyrus. While Andi has conflicting feelings about longtime crush Jonah, Cyrus also will realize he has likes Jonah.

Cyrus will share his feelings about Jonah and his same-sex attraction to Andi’s father Buffy and they will have what Disney hopes will be a positive and well-received conversation about the situation, Us Weekly reported. Cyrus also will have to tell his girlfriend Iris about his feelings.

“Andi Mack is a story about ‘tweens’ figuring out who they are,” Disney Channel said in a statement, Us Weekly reported. “[Creator] Terry Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity.”

Joshua Rush, who plays Cyrus on the show, also posted a statement on Instagram about the storyline.

“Starting conversations about trust, love, relationships and family dynamics is easier when you have a show that you can relate to. Andi Mack gives young people and their parents, mentors and champions a meaningful way to talk about these topics and the power to decide their futures. I’m so proud to bring Cyrus’ groundbreaking storyline to life and for you to see what we’ve been working on.”

The show already has featured the mature storyline of Andi finding out that her sister Bex is actually her mother, who had her as a teen.

It's not the first gay character for the Disney Channel, but it is the first time it will tackle a coming-out story, especially with such a prominent character in the series.

Twitter users were generally supportive of the storyline.
