Dish Network lost more subscribers in the third quarter that ended Sept. 30 as streaming services like Netflix continue to take their toll, although the Dish losses were slightly fewer than analysts had predicted and profits were a little higher.

The losses were reported to be 116,000, but even these numbers were deceiving. The satellite provider actually lost 320,000 traditional satellite customers during that period, Variety reported, and gained 204,000 subscribers to its much slimmer (and cheaper) SlingTV online streaming service.

According to Reuters, analysts had predicted Dish would lose 142,000 subscribers in the third quarter, but that its profit would be higher than it was. Dish’s net income was $307 million or 64 cents per share, when analysts expected a profit of 68 cents per share.

SlingTV may be in for a challenge going forward, however, as competitor DirecTV will launch its own internet streaming service DirecTV Now, with more than 100 channels for $35 compared to Sling’s 30 channels for $20.

Despite the move toward streamlined channel packages and internet streaming, however, Dish’s revenue per pay-TV customer averaged $89.44 per month, up from $86.33 in the same quarter the previous year, Variety reported.

“Satellite TV technology is losing its currency faster than anyone would have predicted,” analyst Craig Moffett said about Dish, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a one-way broadcast-only technology in an increasingly two-way interactive world.”

Dish has had ongoing disputes with Tribune Media and NFL Network that have resulted in channels being unavailable to subscribers who want them, and may have also contributed to some customers leaving the carrier.

Competitor DirecTV added 342,000 new subscribers in the second quarter, suggesting satellite is not losing subscribers across the board.
