Diego Maradon was refused U.S. entry after passing insulting remarks about President Donald Trump during an interview to Venezuelan TV channel TeleSur, according to his lawyer.

The 1986 World Cup-winning captain, who has been kicked out of the United States before, was in the process of seeking a visa which was subsequently denied when he was asked what he thought of the U.S. president, to which he responded: "Donald Trump is a chirolita," The Mirror reported.

The Argentinian word "chirolita" is a slang word and common insult that implies someone is of little value, The Sun noted.

Maradona's lawyer, Matias Morla, said he had cautioned the soccer legend to refrain from passing any disparaging remarks about the U.S.

"I was in the embassy and I said 'Diego, please don't talk about the United States' because the interview was with TeleSur and I know how these things go," Morla said, according to The Mirror. "And the second question was 'What do you think of Donald Trump?'… After this, I said I'm going to have to represent you in Miami instead."

Maradona, who is currently manager of United Arab Emirates outfit Al-Fujaira, was applying for a visa to visit Miami for a court case involving his ex-wife, Claudia Villafane, with whom he has been locked in a legal battle for several years.

He claims that Villafane, who was his wife for 14 years, purchased seven luxury properties in Miami with money plundered from him, The Daily Mail said.

This is not the first time that Maradona has encountered difficulties entering the U.S.

According to RT, he was sent home during the World Cup in 1994 after testing positive for cocaine.

In 2013 it was alleged that the former Argentina captain was again denied entry into the country, forcing him to cancel a planned trip to Disney World with his grandson, The Sun noted in a separate report.
