A series of maps illustrating the linguistics and pronunciations of certain words in different regions throughout the country is amusing Americans everywhere on social media who have long debated how to correctly say words like "pecan" and "caramel."
Born from a linguistics survey, the maps are part of a study by Joshua Katz, a Ph. D student studying statistics at North Carolina State University.

The results are both interesting and hilarious. Not only do the maps provide a glimpse into an array of regional accents, but they also show how people in different areas refer to things. For example, those who live in the southeast might call a group of two or more people "ya'll," while the same group of people up north would be referred to as "you guys."
The survey results have been shared and reposted all over Facebook this week and Twitter users are also chatting up a storm about the dialect differences.
