The final season premiere of "Dexter," Showtime's blood-soaked drama that's captivated audiences for the last seven years, aired Sunday to a flood of Twitter commentary from its diehard fans.
Starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, the series chronicles the life of a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a sort of vigilante serial killer of serial killers. Dexter's compulsion to kill comes from his twisted childhood, but he only targets criminals and murderers who must fit the code of ethics laid out by his foster father in order to be eligible victims.
The series has become an unlikely pop culture phenomenon despite its antihero and dark subject matter. It even earned a spot on the Writers Guild of America's recently released
list of 101 best-written shows of all time at No. 66.

"This show has really written its way into history, and it's been very important to the cause of original programming at Showtime," the network's entertainment president David Nevins said at the "Dexter" premiere party earlier this month. "This show put us on the map and paved the way for everything that has come since."
Sunday's season premiere marked the kickoff of the final eighth season.
"This ending has been planned for a couple of years, and every few months or so I kicked the tires and said, 'Are you sure you want to end? Are you sure you want to go?'" Nevins said. "But they had a story in mind, and [showrunner] Scott [Buck] and Sara and Michael and [executive producer] John [Goldwyn] stuck to their guns, and they're doing the end that they wanted to do. And this is the beginning of the end."
Fans set Twitter abuzz Sunday as the "Dexter" premiere aired.
"Dexter" is on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.
