Ex-NFL player De'von Hall is accused of killing his mother in April, but his public defender does not believe he is mentally competent to stand trial.

Hall, 29, is accused of attacking Alecia Benson, 48, at the Baldwin Hills neighborhood home in Los Angeles on April 24 and the family took her off life support four days later, according to KCBS-TV.

He is currently in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles on a $1 million bond, the Los Angeles Times reported. Ashley Morgan Price, Hall's public defender, told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Verastegui on June 28 that she doesn't believe her client is competent to stand trial.

Verastegui has suspended criminal proceedings until a mental evaluation can be completed on Hall, who played for the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after leaving Utah State University, noted KCBS-TV.

"The NFL, in my opinion, should've done a better job in making sure they took care of this kid," Tony Benson, Alecia Benson's brother and De'von Hall's uncle, told the Los Angeles Times. But Hall's college teammates at Utah State told the newspaper stories of Hall's unusual behavior before he reached professional football.

Caleb Taylor, who played at Utah State, described one incident where Hall got on all-fours and chased his brother's small dog in their apartment, wrote the Times. Taylor remembered that they became concerned enough where they brought the dog into another room.

"If he caught the dog, you didn’t know if he was going to pet it or kill it," Taylor told the Times. "I wouldn't want to be in a room one-on-one with him. He showed a lot of signs of aggression."

KCBS-TV stated that Hall had been homeless since leaving the NFL but Benson, who had worked in a doctor's office, took him in to try in an effort to help him. Family members told the Times that they don't believe he understands that she is dead.

"We're a proud family and we take on our responsibilities, period," Tony Benson told the Times. "She didn't want anyone else to be burdened with what he was going through."
