Detroit Children: Freezer Discovery Yields Bodies of Two Kids

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Mar 2015 08:08 PM

A bailiff conducting an eviction Tuesday at a Detroit apartment found the bodies of two children in a freezer. Police said deceased children were a boy and girl, ages 11 and 14.

"I'm really sickened now to find out that it was babies," Court officer Lee Gordon told the Detroit Free Press. "It's not an easy pill to swallow."

Gordon originally thought one of the bodies was an older woman, she told the newspaper.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said a tip helped police find children's mother, who was taken into custody as a person of interest in the case. Two other children are in protective custody.

Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said the bodies may have been there for more than a year, the Free Press said.

"I been staying down here my whole life, and I never saw them outside, to the point where I thought that they actually moved out," neighbor Rocky Ashford told the Free Press.

"The kids used to come and play with my kids, my step kids,” neighbor Tori Childs told WDIV-TV. “There were no signs of injuries or any kind of trauma, at all," she said. "I would have never expected this."

The mother had lived in the apartment for about 10 years and was unemployed, The Associated Press reported. Friends said she was home-schooling her four children.

Neighbor Carrie McDonald said she had spoken to the mother by phone Tuesday morning.

"She told me this morning, 'Ms. Carrie, if you don't never see me again just know that I love you,'" McDonald said, according to the AP.

The Detroit Police Department posted a press release on its Facebook page.
