Derek Fisher, former NBA coach with the New York Knicks, flipped his vehicle on the northbound 101 Freeway in Sherman Oaks, California, on Sunday morning and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Fisher, 42, who was also a former star player with the Los Angeles Lakers, was driving his 2015 Cadillac with his girlfriend, reality television star Gloria Govan, 32, of "Basketball Wives," when it veered to the left as it approached the Interstate 405 interchange, KTLA-TV reported.
The car drove onto the paved shoulder and crashed into a raised concrete curb and metal guardrail, overturned and came to rest on its roof blocking two lanes of traffic on the freeway, the television station noted.
The couple was not injured in the accident, reported KTLA-TV.
Officers learned at the scene that Fisher had been drinking and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after a DUI test, authorities said, according to ESPN.
"We are beyond grateful that we are both OK and no one else was involved,'' Fisher and Govan said in a joint statement Sunday, according to ESPN. The statement thanked supporters for their thoughts and prayers, but made no mention about the crash, arrest, and circumstances, noted the network.
Fisher and Golden State Warriors forward Matt Barnes publicly feuded in 2015 because of Fisher's relationship in Govan, who is Barnes' ex-wife, wrote ESPN. Barnes is currently playing in the NBA Finals with the Warriors as they play the Cleveland Cavaliers.
According to E! News, Fisher has been working as a basketball analyst for TNT and doing basketball coverage for Spectrum SportsNet this season.
Fisher played 13 of his 20 years in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was hired to become the coach of the New York Knicks in June 2014. His first season with the Knicks, the team suffered through its worst record in history with a 17-65 record. He was 23-31 when he was fired as coach in February 2016.
