A deputy was fired a minute after beating the sheriff in a primary election in South Dakota, drawing national attention.

Bob Homme County Deputy Mark Maggs beat his boss, Sheriff Lenny Gramkow, in Tuesday's Republican primary overwhelmingly with nearly 73 percent of 1,209 votes cast, 878-331, according to the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan.

Since no Democrats ran for the office, Maggs became the sheriff-elect for the county until he is sworn in after November's general election. That apparently did not stop Gramkow from firing his replacement a minute after polls closed, the Daily Press & Dakotan said.

Maggs posted his termination letter, with the printed time of 7:01 p.m. Tuesday on Facebook, with the comment: "Here's the integrity of Lenny Gramkow."

"This letter is to inform you that, effective immediately, you are terminated from the position as deputy sheriff for Bon Homme County," the posted letter said. "As of this moment, you are no longer an employee of Bon Homme County. Please turn in all equipment belonging to Bon Homme County by 5 p.m. June 6, 2018."

Gramkow did not respond to the Daily Press & Dakotan's requests for comments on firing Maggs, who is now left without income or health care for his family and four children for the next six months until he is sworn in.

Maggs, who has a bachelor's degree in crime, law, and justice from Penn State University, had worked at the department since 2013, the newspaper said.

KSFY-TV wrote that at a recent Bob Homme County Commissioners meeting, Gramkow said that the state's attorney backs him, and they believe that Maggs' firing was legal.

Despite its legality, many on social media pounced on Gramkow's decision.
