A deer spotted hugging a firefighter on a Canada ferry last week has become the talk of the town.

The friendly animal was wandering around near a Burns Lake in British Columbia on Wednesday looking for people to dish out some cuddles when it walked right up to Jan Giesbrecht for a hug, Canada's Global News reported.

Giesbrecht was transporting firefighting crews to battle wildfires in the area and had just loaded up the night crew in her bus in the south side ferry landing when the deer approached their vehicle and stepped onto the stairs leading into the vehicle.

The deer then followed the bus to the ferry and even hitched a ride to the other side, Global News reported.

Giesbrecht managed to capture a photo of the deer and posted it to Facebook, where it has since been widely shared.

She spotted the deer at the ferry landing again on Friday morning.

"He wanders around visiting people," Giesbrecht said, according to the CBC. "He seems lonely and wants attention."

Grant Borden, a Southside resident who regularly encounters the animal, has named the deer "Elliot."

"This deer is like a dog — it comes up to you and I can pat it on the back, it licks my hand. It's just the friendliest deer going," Bohen said, according to CBC. "For him to be so friendly, it's kind of bizarre and a little unnerving at first."

Bohen said the deer had been bottle fed, which explained why it was comfortable to be around humans.

"When he's nuzzling up to us like a dog would, he's doing it to be affectionate, I guess," Bohen added.

Kevin Nixon, a B.C. Conservation Officer Service, said the deer has acquired a taste for riding the ferry and has been spotted hitching a ride back and forth since its first trip with Giesbrecht and her team.
