Debbie Reynolds' last words to her son before she died on Wednesday were "I want to be with Carrie." The 84-year-old actress suffered a stroke that took her life just a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher died.
Reynolds was stricken about 15 minutes after talking about her daughter's funeral with son Todd Fisher, said TMZ. He said his mother was overcome with grief that morning at home in Los Angeles.
Carrie Fisher, 60, who played the iconic role of Princess Leia four times in the "Star Wars" series, died on Tuesday after being hospitalized following what was thought to be a heart attack during a flight home for the holidays, said USA Today.
Reynolds, a Hollywood icon, had been unforgettable since performing as a teen in the hit movie "Singin' in the Rain." She was nominated for an Oscar in 1965 for her role in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown."
Carrie Fisher was born after Reynolds married heartthrob singer Eddie Fisher in 1955. The couple divorced in 1959 after Eddie Fisher's reported affair with one of Reynolds' best friends, Elizabeth Taylor.
In May, Carrie Fisher openly worried about her mother's health while attending the documentary "Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds," at the Cannes Film Festival, said People magazine.
"It's a lot of times terrifying, but watching my mother, who's incredibly resilient, coping with certain health issues that she's had," Fisher said then. "We were really lucky we got really what probably could be her last (big project)."
"Some of the magic people have left the tribe…for the moment I am inconsolable…" posted Joely Fisher, another daughter of Reynolds and Carrie Fisher's sister, said Entertainment Weekly.
Reynolds appeared in dozens of films, including "How the West Was Won" and "Three Little Words," noted KABC-TV. She played Liberace's mother in the award-winning HBO movie "Behind the Candelabra."
The Texas native was discovered when she came to the attention of talent scouts at 16 after entering a beauty contest, leading her to breakthrough hit "Singin' in the Rain."
The deaths of Reynolds and Fisher left other stars stunned and some posted their condolences on social media.
