The death rates among white adults have surged since the 1990s, and now researchers are blaming the increase on economic and social factors.

Two Princeton University economists, in research released Thursday, said that the economic disaster created many social issues that even a major improvement in politics can’t save at the moment, according to Bloomberg News.

Because of that, middle-aged white Americans with high school diplomas or less are dying younger.

What's more, "middle-aged whites today are more likely to report pain and mental-health problems than their predecessors and are experiencing symptoms of alcoholism at a younger age," Bloomberg noted.

The new study was published in Brookings Papers on Economic Activity.

“Policies, even ones that successfully improve earnings and jobs, or redistribute income, will take many years to reverse the mortality and morbidity increase,” study authors Anne Case and Angus Deaton wrote. “Those in midlife now are likely to do much worse in old age than those currently older than 65.”

The rates of mortality and morbidity — death and illness — are increased among members of the white working class between the ages of 45 and 54.

Case and Deaton — husband and wife — claim that the problem here is the shortage of quality paying jobs for whites who lack the necessary education, according to NPR.

Case and Deaton’s research suggests that the mortality increase is the result of the “pain, distress and social dysfunction” that comes from a life without a college education.

“This is a story of the collapse of the white working class,” Deaton said in an interview, according to ABC News. “The labor market has very much turned against them.”

Deaton says it’s those dynamics that helped President Donald Trump win the presidency.

“The policies that you see, seem almost perfectly designed to hurt the very people who voted for him,” Deaton said of Trump.
