Dean Crouch was fired from the Academy Sports store where he worked as a manager in Tallahassee, Florida, two weeks after he tackled a customer who was trying to steal a gun and ammunition from the store.

The NRA called Crouch a “hero” for chasing the suspect and tackling him as he ran from the store with a Glock, which he had asked another employee to show him from a locked case, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

Twenty-four-year-old suspect Jason White also allegedly had five boxes of ammunition and two magazines for the Glock in a backpack, the Democrat reported. Tallahassee police said White stole two handguns from Cash America Pawn earlier in the day.

Along with another employee, Crouch detained White in the store’s office, where he reportedly admitted to stealing the gun and threatened to shoot people with it, according to the Democrat. White claimed his family was being threatened and that he needed the gun to protect them.

Crouch was suspended from his job after the incident and was fired a week later during a conference call. Academy Sports claims Crouch violated company policies by putting his hands on White, saying “actions inconsistent with our corporate policies were taken,” CBS News reported.

Crouch said he has received other job offers after the incident, but that he wants to get his job back at Academy Sports. “I loved my job there,” he said, according to CBS News.

White was released from jail July 6 on “supervised mental health pre-trial release,” and he has been ordered to stay away from the stores from which he stole guns, CBS reported.
