David Ortiz Suspended for Bumping Ump During Game

Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz is appealing a one-game suspension after he allegedly bumped home plate umpire John Tumpane during a weekend game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Ortiz, who argued with umpires throughout the series with the Orioles, appeared angry in Sunday's game when third base umpire Jerry Meals called a strike on a check swing appeal in the fifth inning, continuing a run-in he had with Meals from Saturday's game, according to the Boston Globe.

Ortiz flung his bat on the plate, leading to Tumpace ejecting him from the game. That's when Ortiz walked up to Tumpace and appeared on a video replay to bump the chest of the umpire during the argument.

"They got rules, man. They do what they got to do," Ortiz said of the suspension, which came down on Tuesday, according to the Globe. "You just appeal it and then just make your case and go from there. I don't remember doing that (bumping Tumpane). I don't have much detail about it. We're going to do what we normally do."

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell told MLB.com that Ortiz's suspension came as a surprise to him.

"If there was any contact, it was slight, if at all," said Farrell. "And it wasn't anything intentional, I know that. I know that there was a lot of frustration on David's part from Saturday's game as well as the two check-swing calls, that even in review of the film, didn't look like he broke the plane, or the front edge of the plate. The actions are what they are. Still, there were some things I think that were leading up to that."

Ortiz has been frustrated at the plate so far this season, batting .204 in 13 games with two home runs and four RBIs in 44 at-bats, according to Rotoworld.com.

"I don't like arguing with umpires in general," Ortiz told MLB.com. "I hate it. I hate it more than what people think I do. I have a good relationship with them. I have no complaints with umpires. But like I say, it's a game that we play, you're trying to win and whenever you feel like something is wrong you're going to have to say something about it and then you move on."
