Former President Barack Obama will be the first guest on David Letterman's monthly Netflix show “This Guest Needs No Introduction,” premiering Jan. 12.
The interview will be Obama’s first on a television talk show since he left office in 2017. It also will be Letterman’s first after retiring in 2015 from CBS’s “The Late Show.”
According to Rolling Stone, the interview will be conducted over several locations inside and outside a studio and will be more intimate and deeper than Letterman's interviews on “The Late Show.” They will still feature his signature humor, however.
Other guests for upcoming episodes of the show include George Clooney, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, Howard Stern, and Malala Yousafzai, according to Fortune.
The show plans to feature only one guest per hour-long episode, rather than the multiple guest format that now dominates late-night shows. Six episodes of the show are planned.
“The thing I like about [the show] is that it fits exactly what I want to do and it’s with people I’m fond of working with,” Letterman told Variety in August. At the time, Letterman also expressed interest in interviewing President Donald Trump and Pope Francis, but neither has been announced as a planned guest so far.
“The nice thing about this show is I hope we can construct it in a more leisurely and more thoughtful way,” Letterman said, Variety reported. “After doing 6,000 shows, six sounds just about right.”
Twitter was divided between those who were excited for the show and those who didn’t want to see another Obama interview.
