Dave Chappelle reportedly told an audience that he “f***ed up” when he told "Saturday Night Live" viewers in November to give new President-elect Donald Trump a chance.

“I was the first guy on TV to say ‘Give Trump a chance,’” Chappelle said at a benefit dinner for the non-profit charity Robin Hood on Monday night, NBC’s Willie Geist tweeted Monday evening. “I f***ed up. Sorry.”

In his "SNL" opening monologue on Nov. 12, Chappelle said, “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck, and I’m going to give him a chance, and we the historically disenfranchised demand that he give us one, too.”

Chappelle didn’t back off his comments in an April interview with The New York Times' T Magazine, saying, “I didn’t softball ’em. I said we demand he gives us a chance.”

“Welcome to the world, this is how it goes — tyranny of the majority, or tyranny of the minority in this case,” he told T Magazine. “I feel like a lot of people in America understand what the political process felt like for disenfranchised people.”

Chappelle didn’t explain any further why he regretted his statement about Trump, and has maintained since November that he was not a Trump supporter in any way, Complex reported.

Chappelle fans saw the comedian's comment as a chance to continue debating Trump’s merits on Twitter and whether he deserves any respect as president.
