Daredevils Walk Tightrope 1,200 Feet Above French Alps

Two daredevils walked a tightrope 1,200 feet above the French Alps on Monday.

The French tightrope artists Julien Millot and Tancrede Melet walked 196 feet between two ski lifts while balancing themselves barefoot on a wire with a width of less than 1 inch, Britain's Daily Mail reported.

The pair belongs to a group called Skyliners, which travel the globe doing various stunts and extreme sports.

Monday's feat marked the 10-year anniversary of the opening of the Paradaski ski area and its Vanoise Express transport system, CBS News reported. Paradaski is one of Europe's largest ski areas that consists of two glaciers spread out over a 264-mile area of land, according to its website.

"We're all scared of heights. It can show differently on different people," Millot said, CBS News reported. "What is common to both of us is that, despite being afraid of heights, we love to play with heights on a daily basis, we like to confront ourselves to heights whether by being on the highline or jumping and with our friends we use heights because we want to make the most out of nature."

The only safety measure Millot and Melet took while balancing themselves over the French Alps was a small rope attached to their harness that would have prevented them from plunging to certain death if struck by a wind or if they uncharacteristically slipped.

"We have no choice but to trust our equipment because it's our lifeline," Melet said. "Our approach is to go step by step. We don't overestimate or underestimate ourselves, we just do what we can when we're ready. Julien and I are both engineers so we are rigorous with the installations and it allows us to have a clear mind and avoid any dangerous hazard."

Millot and Melet are the subjects of a documentary titled "I Believe I Can Fly," which, according to the Daily Mail, "details their amazing exploits on tightropes and slacklines across the world." The film will reportedly premiere next November.
