Danny Heinrich, confessed killer of 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling back in 1989, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on a federal child pornography charge in a deal that let him escape murder or kidnapping charges.

Heinrich, 53, entered a guilty plea on Sept. 6 in the deal that prevents him from facing more serious state charges, but will not shield him from civil litigation, reported Minnesota Public Radio.

The deal led the way for Heinrich to lead authorities to the body of the little boy from St. Joseph, Minnesota.

"I am truly sorry for my evil acts that I have done against victims and their family, and the shame I brought on myself and my family," Heinrich told the court. "The suffering and pain they have spoke today I will always remember. Mr. and Mrs. Wetterling: the heinous acts, the selfishness are unforgivable for what I have taken away from you."

Wetterling's mother, Patty Wetterling, addressed Heinrich directly during a hearing at U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, said the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"You didn't need to kill him," Patty Wetterling said. "He did nothing wrong. He just wanted to go home. You planned to hurt someone that night."

Amy Wetterling, Jacob Wetterling's sister added, per the Star Tribune: "The worst part is that for nearly 27 years, (Heinrich) let us believe that we would someday be able to see Jacob again. He watched us suffer through anniversary after anniversary."

Heinrich was awaiting trial on 25 counts of child pornography before federal prosecutors cut a deal with him in exchange for leading investigators to Jacob Wetterling's remains, reported the Star Tribune. The newspaper added that authorities could continue to hold Heinrich after his prison sentence under the state's civil sex offender commitment.

"Today’s sentencing marks the close of a sad chapter in Minnesota history," U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger said Monday, reported WCCO-TV. "Danny Heinrich hurt countless lives, none more tragic than Jacob Wetterling.

"I encourage all Minnesotans to draw on the example of Patty and Jerry Wetterling, who transformed their grief into hope. Patty and Jerry have dedicated their lives to helping other parents bring their kids home."
