'Dancing With the Stars' Says Goodbye to Fan Favorite Tommy Chong

"Dancing With the Stars" said goodbye to its oldest competitor this week as 76-year-old Tommy Chong got the boot in the semifinal round.

The fan favorite and pro partner Peta Murgatroyd performed two routines Monday night — one "plugged" number and one "unplugged," or a stripped-down version of the same song — but their 62 out of 80 possible points was not enough to continue on to next week's finals.

"Everything," Chong said when co-host Erin Andrews asked him what the show meant to him, adding that it just "showed that . . . old stoners can perform when they need to."

In the end, it was Chong's memory that was his undoing.

"Tommy showed a fair amount of rhythm and grace; his Argentine tango from Week 3 is one of the season's happy surprises," The Wall Street Journal's Lisa Reynolds wrote. "Peta, not paired with her usual hot-man partner, came up with some of her most creative choreography since Donald Driver in Season 14. But Tommy's memory, which was faulty even when routines were short, hampered him as the competition progressed, and so did the injuries."

Chong's final rumba, while not perfect, was a fitting departure, telling his life story and giving the comedian a touching sendoff performance.

"Artistically, it’s a great marriage of song and story," Reynolds wrote. "As for technique, there's a lot of focus on arm movements, but not hip action, which a rumba needs. Even before Julianne opens her mouth, one knows the word 'magical' will come out. Bruno is in awe of the ballet echoes and of Peta's choreography. Peta is crying again about how proud she is of Tommy."

Chong's daughter, actress Rae Dawn Chong, praised for her father for his surprise run on "DWTS" during a video package.

"Truth is, Tommy Chong was the perfect dad for me," she said, according to USA Today. "He's taught me perseverance. He's taught me strength."

The show now goes on as the final four contestants battle it out for the Mirrorball Trophy. It's down to "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" actor Alfonso Ribeiro, "Pretty Little Liars'" Janel Parrish, "Duck Dynasty" reality star Sadie Robertson, and celebrity video blogger Bethany Mota.

"Dancing With the Stars" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
