Legendary Beatle Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana made history when the artists played together in 2012, and on Sunday night at the 2014 Grammys, they were recognized for their song "Cut Me Some Slack."

The duo between longtime Rock and Roll Hall of Famer McCartney and Nirvana, who will be enshrined this spring to the hall of fame, originally came about for Dave Grohl's documentary "Sound City: Real to Reel," according to Rolling Stone magazine.

The group — consisting of McCartney, Grohl, and Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear — took the stage after winning for Best Rock Song and spoke in admiration of each other.

"I have to say we wouldn't be here if it weren’t for Paul and for Ringo," Grohl said in his acceptance speech. Novoselic, standing next to Grohl, quickly added: "and for Black Sabbath and the Rolling Stones."

"This song was two hours in my studio," Grohl continued. "I called up Paul and said, 'Hey man, do you wanna come over and jam with some friends of mine?' And he came over to the studio and we knocked this out in a couple hours. To me, that's what rock and roll is all about. Thank you everyone from our Sound City family."

McCartney was gracious, adding: "Yeah, he's right. 'He said to me, 'Come along and we'll do a jam on 'Long Tall Sally.' I said, 'No, we've been there, we've done that. We should just make something up.' And this is it."

In July, McCartney brought out Nirvana during his tour stop at Seattle's Safeco Field, marking only the second time the band played before its hometown since the death of its iconic lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1994. It was the first reunion in 15 years.

They played "Cut Me Some Slack" and several classic Beatles tunes at the Seattle concert, according to Rolling Stone.

The Grammys win continued a resurgence for Nirvana's surviving members, after the group learned in December that they were one of the 2014 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Nirvana will be joined by KISS, Hall and Oates, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, and Cat Stevens in the Rock Hall.
