Dr. Craig Spencer, the New York City Ebola patient, was released from the hospital Tuesday after being declared virus-free.

Spencer contracted the disease last month after treating Ebola patients in Guinea with a team from Doctors Without Borders, The Huffington Post reported.

At a news conference Tuesday, the New York doctor was greeted with cheers and a hug from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who said it's a "good feeling to hug a hero," CNN reported.

Spencer, 33, had been treated in isolation at Bellevue Hospital since his Oct. 23 diagnosis.

"Please join me in returning our attention back to West Africa," Spencer said during the news conference, where he described crying as he held children too weak to recover from the disease, The New York Times reported.

Spencer’s infection and the subsequent race to find those he had been in contact with prompted Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to call for travelers who had had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa to be quarantined for 21 days, The Times noted. That sparked a debate about whether quarantines were necessary or if they could hamper efforts to treat Ebola patients.

Ebola has killed nearly 5,000 people this year, including one in the United States. Thomas Eric Duncan, who contracted the disease in Liberia, died in Dallas, Reuters reported.

Twitter users expressed support for Spencer.
