CPAC: Russian Flags With Trump's Name Waved by Attendees After Prank

Some CPAC attendees waved small Russian flags stamped with Trump’s name during his speech Friday before White House officials confiscated them.

It was not immediately clear whether the flags were a protest against the president or were intended to support him, the New York Daily News said, or even whether the flag-wavers were aware that the red, white, and blue flags resembled Russia’s flag.

Online reports suggested the flags were a prank, and Snap Inc.'s Peter Hamby tweeted pictures of a young man handing them out before Trump’s speech.

Tim Alberta of Politico tweeted the attendees “saw red, white, and blue — with ‘TRUMP’ stamped across it — and started to wave them. Gave no thought to Russian flag, they all said.”

Some attendees wanted to keep the flags as a souvenir and “one man said that no one had a sense of humor anymore,” according to The Hill.

The Trump administration has been accused several times of having close ties with Russia and even of colluding with Russia in hacking and leaking Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s emails to influence the election in November.

Trump said in a news conference last week that he only spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin after the election when Putin congratulated him on winning the presidency and once during the transition period to talk about U.S.-Russian relations.

Trump has denied having close ties with Putin and colluding with Russia on any hacking attempts.

Julian Assange, who was responsible for the Wikileaks hacks of Clinton’s private email server, told Fox News that Russia was not the source of the leaked information.
