A Staten Island couple found a safe full of loot from a 2011 burglary of their neighbor's residence recently and turned it back over to them instead of keeping it, WCBS-TV reported.

Matthew and Maria Colonna-Emanuel had noticed the old silver box in their yard for years, but assumed it was a cable box and never bothered with it, the couple told the television station.

The couple told CNN that the rusty metal box between two trees in their yard was there when they moved in.

When they went to replace the trees along the side their home recently, they discovered that it was not a cable box, but a safe. When they opened it, they found thousands of dollars soaked and rotting way, WCBS-TV reported.

"And there are all these bags with hundreds and jewelry, diamonds, engagement rings, dozens of rings, gold with jade," Matthew Emanuel told the television station. "It was stunning."

The couple also found paper with an address inside the safe that they believed linked it to their neighbors. The neighbors informed the Emanuels that they had been robbed in 2011 and one of the items missing was a safe, WCBS-TV wrote.

According to CNN, the New York Police Department documented the burglary at their neighbors' home the day after Christmas in 2011. A safe containing $52,000 worth of property, authorities told CNN.

"The cops told (the neighbors), you'll never see your stuff again," Colonna-Emanuel told CNN.

Colonna-Emanuel said one of the questions they have been asked was why didn't they just keep the cash?

"A couple of people asked us, 'Why did you return it?'" Colonna-Emanuel told WCBS-TV. "It wasn't even a question. It wasn't ours."

The television station reported that the neighbors declined to be identified but said they were "surprised and grateful" about the safe's discovery and the Emanuel's honesty.

Matthew Emanuel added: "The reward is karma. Good karma."
