A couple originally from Colorado sold everything to buy their dream boat, only to have it sink two days later.

Tanner Broadwell and Nikki Walsh sold about $5,000 in possessions, including a car, to buy the boat, and saved another $5,000 for repairs to the boat and supplies to travel to the Caribbean, USA Today reported.

They set sail from Florida and didn’t get far before they hit a sandbar off the coast the next day and began to take on water, CBS News reported. The couple grabbed their pug Remy, some of his supplies, and their IDs and escaped to a row boat as their home and all their other possessions slowly sank below the water.

“It was terrifying,” Walsh said, KDVR reported. “I’ve never been so scared in my entire life. I could hardly speak. My hands were shaking.”

“There were sentimental objects on the boat that can’t be replaced,” Broadwell told CBS News.

The boat was uninsured, and both Broadwell and Walsh are unemployed as they quit their jobs to sail. They have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money to remove the boat from the ocean, which may cost thousands of dollars.

The couple said they aren’t giving up and plan to get another boat and try again.

“I want to get back out there and continue our dream to sail and travel,” Walsh said, KVDR repprted. “Hopefully we can share it with everybody and show them you can do it.’

Social media was not kind to the couple.
