Judge Dismisses Pittsburgh Diocese Obamacare Lawsuit

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh seeking an  exemption from Obamacare, ruling the diocese hasn’t been harmed by the 2010 healthcare  reform law.

 

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the diocese sued the federal government because of  concerns it could be forced to cover abortion-related drugs and services,.

 

But U.S. District Judge Terrence F. McVerry found that federal agencies responsible for enforcing Obamacare were taking clear and concrete steps to amend requirements of the law so that religious institutions could not be forced to directly contract for employee insurance coverage that includes contraceptives.

 

McVerry noted in his dismissal of the case that the federal government had published a notice last March, months before the diocese filed its lawsuit, notifying religious organizations that it was working to resolve their concerns.
