Conspiracy theorists are charging that Las Vegas shooting victims are government actors who staged the massive shooting last month to help push gun control policies in the United States, The Guardian reported.

Some of those theorists have targeted victims and family members on social media, trolling their accounts and even threatening them, according to the British newspaper. The comments have led to some victims deleting their accounts on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Fifty-eight people were killed and more than 500 injured when Stephen Paddock opened fire on concert goers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in what's being called the worst mass shooting and modern U.S. history, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said. Paddock eventually killed himself after firing on thousands of festival attendees from a corner suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

One of those victims, Canadian Braden Matejka, 30, who The Guardian said survived a bullet to the head in the shooting spree, reported receiving death threats on Facebook.

"You are a lying piece of s*** and I hope someone truly shoots you in the head," one commenter told Matejka on Facebook, per The Guardian.

Others have charged on Twitter that Matejka was nothing more than a "crisis actor."

"There are all these families dealing with likely the most horrific thing they'll ever experience, and they are also met with hate and anger and are being attacked online about being a part of some conspiracy," said Taylor Matejka, Braden's brother, told The Guardian.

"It's madness. I can't imagine the thought process of these people. Do they know that we are actual people?" Taylor Matejka continued.

Alex Jones, of the website and Internet show "InfoWars," has painted Paddock as an agent of the Islamic State, a leftist activist, an anti-Trump radical and a possible stooge for a broader conspiracy intent on disrupting democracy, The New York Times reported earlier this month.

"Could Stephen Paddock, the lone Vegas shooter, have been a patsy to kick off the left's war with the right in the streets of America?" Jones said on Facebook, per the Times. The comments accompanied a video titled "Video Shows Second Shooter During Vegas Massacre," which has been viewed more than 1.1 million times.
