UFC lightweights Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have apparently agreed on details of a mega-fight between them, which may be announced within weeks.
According to The Irish Sun, the two fighters have reached a multimillion-dollar agreement after months of speculation and verbal sparring about whether a fight could take place at all.
A source close to McGregor told The Sun: “Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have agreed to a deal to fight and have both settled on their respective fees. The contract hasn’t been officially signed yet because of a third party hold-up but all the details have all been agreed on.”
McGregor canceled an event scheduled for this Friday to go to Las Vegas, possibly to negotiate and nail down the details of the fight, the Sun reported.
McGregor has long wanted to fight 39-year-old Mayweather, who has an undefeated record of 49-0.
In the past, Mayweather has been offered as much as $25 million to fight McGregor, but McGregor said recently he wanted $100 million to fight Mayweather “under boxing rules because [Mayweather is] afraid of a fair fight,” according to The Washington Post.
Mayweather said he was retiring after fighting Andre Berto in 2015, then said he wouldn’t get back into the ring for less than $100 million. Mayweather did say in January that if he were going to fight anyone, it would be McGregor, the Post reported.
More recently, Mayweather said, “I believe the fight could happen. ... Let’s give the fans what they want to see,” the Post reported.
On Saturday, Mayweather told ESPN that “we’re getting very, very close” but that nothing was guaranteed yet.
